A Weekend Split for Charlotte
by Devon Jeffreys

The final weekend of the NBA regular season had its ups and downs for the Charlotte Bobcats. But it was marked by two more strong performances by Tyson Chandler.

TC scored a sum total of 18 points and pulled down a combined 16 rebounds as the Bobcats fell to the Rockets in Houston on Friday, but returned home strong to knock off the Detroit Pistons on Saturday.

On Friday night, TC was at his best on the defensive end, pulling down 10 of his 12 boards on the defensive glass and swatting five Rockets shots into oblivion.

Of his 10 defensive boards, Tyson, making his second consecutive start, pulled down five in the first quarter alone. His work on the glass helped keep Charlotte in the game in the first, as they trailed by only one, 24-23 after one. Ty recorded two of his five blocks in the first 1:08 of the game, stifling Rockets forward Luis Scola, not once, but twice. Later in the game, TC blocked a pair of layups by Kyle Lowry and a jumper by Jared Jeffries. Ty also scored two of his seven points in the first with an opening jump shot that found the bottom of the bucket to give the Cats a 2-0 edge, 18 seconds into the game.

TC was active on the glass throughout the game. He picked up two boards in the second, one on each end, and two more defensive boards in the third. Tyson scored another bucket early in the fourth and was fouled but missed the free throw. He would go on to secure three rebounds in the final quarter, including a putback slam of a DJ Augustin miss to tie the score at 80 with 6:13 remaining.

Charlotte jumped out to an 85-82 lead with 3:49 remaining, capped by a 1-2 trip to the line by TC. But Houston followed with a 9-0 run to take the lead and pull away with the win.

A SHORT TRIP HOME

After their two-game road trip wrapped in Houston, Charlotte returned home on Saturday for a one-game stand with the Detroit Pistons.

Tyson scored 11 points and grabbed four boards as the Bobcats picked up a 99-95 win over Detroit. Of his 11 points, No. 6 scored nine at the line.

TC was quiet early, scoring only one-point, on a 1-2 trip to the free throw line and securing only one rebound in the first half. But No. 6 was a beast in the post in the second half, drawing fouls and making successful trips to the line.

Tyson was 8-8 from the line in the second half, including 6-6 in the fourth quarter as he helped Charlotte hold off a furious Detroit rally. The Pistons came back from a five-point deficit after three to briefly take the lead in the fourth, but Tyson's free throws helped the Bobcats stave off defeat.

He also had a third quarter tip-in for his only bucket of the game on his only attempt. Over his last nine games, No. 6 has taken full advantage of high-percentage shot opportunities in the post, sinking baskets at an 80 percent clip. He was a perfect 4-4 from the field over the weekend.

Despite their victory on Saturday, Charlotte is virtually locked into the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference, meaning they'll match up with the Orlando Magic in the first round. The first game of the series will be next Saturday or Sunday in Orlando. The official schedule will not be released until the season ends on Wednesday.

NEXT UP
Tyson and the Bobcats make their final regular season road trip tonight when they head to New Jersey to take on the Nets. TC will be matched up with talented New Jersey center Brook Lopez. Tip-off of the showdown is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST and the game can be seen on Fox Sports Carolinas.
